Who are we?

Magis Consulting are specialists in gender education, leadership and social media literacy programs.

Our areas of expertise are drawn from our Director and Founder, Dr Melinda Davis, who has almost 30 years experience as an educator. Melinda is a passionate advocate of women in leadership, specifically in industries where there are few opportunities for women in leadership. Melinda’s doctoral thesis was on the leadership experiences of women in boys’ schools and as an area she knows expertly well, she leads workshops on how women can be successful in areas where they are not always positioned to achieve success.

Melinda’s other great passion is media, and as a media teacher for almost three decades she assists organisations to deliver gender, character and social-media education programs to their communities and to embed cultures of respect. Magis also offers organisations assistance in sensitively navigating gender-related and/or social media incidents with a focus on human dignity and rebuilding relationships.

At Magis, we consult, educate and empower.

Why are we called Magis?

The Latin term magis (pronounced mah-jis) is a deeply significant one to me.

I spent many years working in a Jesuit school which deeply shaped my value system as a leader and as a person.

That's where I learned about the magis.

Its literal latin translation is 'more', but it also means an eternal pursuit for human and spiritual excellence. When we strive for the magis, we aim to forever be striving to do more, be more and to prioritise depth and authenticity.

This is an ideology that I apply to all aspects of my professional and personal life and it underpins my approach to my consultancy work. I always strive for more, to be a better human being, colleague and leader. The pursuit of depth is never ending and is the antidote to superficiality that the world really needs right now.

This is why I named my business Magis consulting. When you work with me, we will start with identifying your values and culture, and identify where I can bring more - the magis, the required depth - to your organisation. â€‹

I'm Melinda Davis.
I'm the Director and founder of Magis Consulting.

I am a courageous and resilient educational leader who values relational learning, clear communication, and authentic servant leadership. My leadership mantra is to 'do as you say'. I believe school leaders need to visibly lead and live what they articulate their core values and non-negotiables to be; this is the leadership challenge that I value most, and I lead intentionally with courage, humour and heart.

Over my teaching and leadership career I have taught and led in a range of diverse educational contexts; in co-educational government and independent schools, in catholic systemic and independent girls’ schools, and independent boys’ schools. I have also taught at the University of Melbourne and at RMIT.

I have extensive experience in curriculum design and pedagogical leadership and have held significant roles at ACARA as Head Writer of the Australian Curriculum for The Arts, and at VCAA, where I was Chief Assessor and study design writer for VCE Media. I am also a published VCE textbook author and have presented at several domestic and international conferences on my research and experiences in leadership.

My Doctorate at The University of Melbourne is on the leadership experiences of women in independent boys' schools in Australia. As a strong advocate of boys’ education, I am equally as passionate about the contribution of women to boys' schools and their formation at such an important stage of their lives.
